Tips and advice

May Tips.

Enjoy the lasy month of spring, summer is just around the corner.

  • Prune Forsythia and Ribes (flowering current) after flowering, best to cut out 25% each year.
  • Keep on top of weeds by hoeing little and often.
  • Sow French and runner beans, courgettes, squashes, sweetcorn and pumpkins.  Alternatively purchase vegetable plants we have grown for you.  Sow other vegetables such as lettuce and carrots for succession.
  • Do not plant outside any tender bedding plants or vegetable until the frosts are over. 'Don't cast your clout until May is out'.
  • Look out for pests and treat accordingly.
  • Sow a new lawn or lay 'Rolawn Medallion' turf, available at out plant centre.  We advise people to lay turf green side up.
  • Plant shrubs, perennials, trees and hedging and keep well watered especially for the first 6-8 weeks after planting.

June Tips.

Summertime, the scent of roses, and the taste of strawberries.

  • Put up your hanging baskets, plant your window boxes and plant out your tender summer bedding.  We have a large range of plants and baskets for you to choose from.
  • Water your containers, window boxes and hanging baskets each day and liquid feed and dead head once a week.
  • Water any newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials etc once a week for at least 6-8 weeks after planting.
  • Trim your buxus (box) hedges and topiary plants.
  • If repairing patches in your lawn, assume the turf has no thickness and alllow for settlement.
  • Protect your soft fruit from birds.
  • Enjoy your rhubarb and strawberries.
  • Keep growing vegetables for succession, especially salad crops, lettuce, rocket and radishes.
  • Harvest new potatoes.
